Augusta vs Goldco: who actually charges less in 2026?

Quick verdict: They're built for different buyers. Augusta wins on fee transparency and zero sales pressure but requires $50,000 to even open an account. Goldco wins on accessibility ($25K minimum, lower-friction onboarding, more aggressive promotions) but the spread can run 2-3x wider depending on which coins you end up with. Pick Augusta if you have $50K+ and prioritize transparency. Pick Goldco if you have $25K-$50K or want the brand recognition + promotional pricing. Skip both if you want a four-metal portfolio (use Birch).

Total industry score (per our methodology):

The cost difference, in dollars

For a $100,000 investment held for 5 years:

| Cost component | Augusta | Goldco (low end) | Goldco (high end) | |---|---|---|---| | Spread on initial purchase | $4,000–$6,000 | $5,000 | $15,000 | | Annual fees × 5 years | $1,050 | $1,175 | $1,175 | | 5-year total cost | $5,050–$7,050 | $6,175 | $16,175 | | vs. Augusta | baseline | +$0 to +$1,125 | +$9,125 to +$11,125 |

The Goldco range is the key insight. If you catch Goldco during a strong promotional period and the spread lands at the low end (5%), the 5-year cost is comparable to Augusta. If the spread lands at 15% (no promo, or aggressive sales), you're paying $10,000+ more over 5 years for the same gold.

This is why we recommend Decoding any Goldco quote before signing. Augusta's spread is predictable; Goldco's depends entirely on what coins you end up with.

The honest negatives — both companies

We don't believe in too-positive comparisons. Here's what each does poorly:

Augusta's weaknesses

  1. $50,000 minimum is a hard barrier. No exceptions, no flexibility. If you have $45K, Augusta will tell you to go elsewhere. (Augusta pointing you to alternatives directly is itself a trust signal — they don't try to upsell you.)
  2. Gold and silver only. No platinum, no palladium. Period.
  3. Onboarding takes a week. Some buyers find this frustrating. Augusta won't accelerate even if you ask.

Goldco's weaknesses

  1. Aggressive sales follow-ups. Reviewers consistently report 5-10 phone calls in the first week after requesting information. Drops off after a firm "stop calling," but the initial cycle is real.
  2. Spread variability. 5-15% is a wide range. Without the Decoder, you don't know which end you're on until you've already paid. Run any Goldco quote through the Decoder.
  3. "10% back silver" promotional pricing complexity. The promo can be great or it can be a slight-of-hand. The silver coins are sometimes priced significantly above spot, which means the effective discount is closer to 5%, not 10%. Decode the math.
  4. Texas Depository upgrade pitch. A Goldco rep may suggest Texas Bullion Depository over Delaware Depository (sometimes pitched as "more secure" or "physically separated"). This adds $50/yr to your storage fee. Both depositories are well-rated. Unless you have a specific reason to prefer Texas, Delaware is the default — and saves $50/yr × however long you hold.
